Fifth Capital-Level Meeting of the Women, Peace and Security Focal, 5th to 9th of June 2023

The Co-Chairs of the UN Network of National Focal Points on Women, Peace and Security, the United States and Romania, held the fifth capital level meeting of the National Focal Points on 5th -9th June under the theme: "Advancing the Adaptability and Evolution of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda, Framework for Implementing Policy Change".
The Romanian delegation present at the activity was composed of: H.E. Andrei Muraru (Ambassador of Romania to the USA), Anca Dragu (President of the Committee for Human Rights, Equal Opportunities, Cults and Minorities of the Romanian Senate), Ana-Maria Catauta (President of the Joint Permanent Committee of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate for relations with UNESCO), Lieutenant-Colonel Manuela Bercea (National Focal Point of Romania), Gianina Dimitrescu (Director of the National Agency for Equal Opportunities between Women and Men), Capt. Oana Feraru (Gender Management Office), Iulia Lupulescu (Embassy of Romania to the USA) and Cristina Radoi (civil society representative).
Throughout the conference, workshops were held for National Focal Points and civil society to examine and share best practices of collaboration in the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda.
National Focal Points also participated in discussions on existing and emerging security issues, including climate change and power structures.
The US Department of State, the US Department of Defense, and security sector partners held an event at the Women's Military Memorial at Arlington Cemetery, where Romania's National Focal Point delivered a speech on our country's progress on Women, Peace and Security.
As a novelty, the meeting also had a parliamentary component, where Anca Dragu and Ana-Maria Catauta highlighted the urgent need for women to occupy positions at all levels of leadership and to be involved in peace and security negotiations.
