By Law no. 23 of March 9, 2015, the Day of equal opportunities between women and men was established in Romania, thus establishing May 8 as the day to celebrate equal opportunities and treatment between women and men.
Supporter of the principle of equal opportunities between women and men, the Ministry of National Defense coordinates the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda at the national level, creating a structure dedicated to this field, the Gender Management Office.
The progress made by our country and the uniqueness offered by the involvement of the Ministry of National Defense in the implementation of the resolutions of the Security Council of the United Nations Organization in the field of Women, peace and security, generated the nomination for the year 2023 of the National Focal Point as co-chair, together with the counterpart from the USA , of the Global Network of National Focal Points.
Our institution celebrates and highlights the importance of equal opportunities between women and men, as an integral part of the democratic culture in our country, so the Ministry of National Defense was represented at the meeting organized on May 8, by the Ministry of Family, Youth and Equal Opportunities, at the Palace of the Parliament, by Mrs. Lieutenant-Commander Romina Mîrza and Mrs. Raluca Popescu, successful women who demonstrated that there are no discriminatory criteria or restrictions, for access to positions once reserved exclusively for men.
On May 09, this year, the Gender Management Office organized a new working meeting of the National Implementation Group for the elaboration of the National Strategy and the National Action Plan regarding Resolution 1325 (2000) of the Security Council of the United Nations Women, peace and security for the period 2024-2028, in which the contributions of the institutions involved in the process of drafting the new normative act were analyzed, according to legal obligations.
Representatives of the following institutions participated in the activity: the Ministry of National Defense, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Agency for Equal Opportunities between Women and Men, the Romanian Intelligence Service, the Special Telecommunications Service and the National Penitentiary Administration.
Moreover, on May 10 of this year, the Gender Management Office organized a meeting with gender advisors at the level of central structures and categories of forces, for their consultation in order to develop the National Strategy and the National Plan of Action on United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000) Women, peace and security 2024-2028.
Int the first part of the meeting, discussions were held regarding the stage of the co-presidency of the Global Network of National Focal Points, exercised by Romania and the United States of America, during the year 2023, and the implications related to the organization of the National Focal Points Conference, which will take place between 07-09 November 2023.
In the second part of the meeting, the necessary contributions from all the structures involved in the process of developing the National Strategy and the National Action Plan regarding Resolution 1325 (2000) of the United Nations Security Council Women, peace and security for the period 2024-2028, were presented, according to legal obligations.
