Participation of the National Focal Point for the Women, Peace and Security Agenda in the International Webinar "Military Justice: Emerging Institutional Challenges"

On August 27, 2026, Romania’s National Focal Point for the Women, Peace and Security agenda participated in the international webinar "Military Justice: Emerging Institutional Challenges," organized by the Latin American Security and Defense Network (RESDAL) with the support of Global Affairs Canada through the Elsie Initiative.

Held as part of the fifth edition of the "Interregional Dialogues from the Global South" series, the event brought together experts from Colombia, Brazil, and Bangladesh to address the role of military justice in preventing and managing cases of harassment and sexual abuse within defense institutions. Discussions focused on delineating the respective jurisdictions of military and civil courts, protecting individuals who report such incidents, preventing reprisals, upholding procedural safeguards, and the responsibility of commanders in fostering an institutional climate based on trust and accountability.

Particular attention was paid to situations arising in UN peacekeeping missions, where national accountability mechanisms complement United Nations standards of conduct and procedures. Participation in the webinar provided a valuable platform for exchanging best practices regarding harassment prevention, victim protection, and the development of safe, inclusive, and accountable working environments within defense and security institutions.
